zenO DropSense — Checkout Drop-Off Analyzer for WooCommerce

Identify where shoppers abandon checkout and what triggers failure (validation, payment, shipping) — with a step funnel, top-issues table, and exports. No external APIs required for v1.

  • Find the top drop step → funnel by checkout step → depends on standard Woo checkout flow and sufficient traffic.
  • Understand “why” → error/event logging (sanitized) → depends on gateway/shipping plugins exposing errors consistently.
  • Segment by context → device/source/country/cart band → accuracy depends on available referrer/UTM and setup.
  • Act quickly → “Top Issues” table + export → improvement depends on changes you apply and period comparison.
  • Stay lightweight → async tracking + aggregation → best results with recommended sampling on high-traffic stores.
Step funnel Top issues Device/source breakdown CSV export Retention controls

Pro (optional): automated UX suggestions, comparisons, advanced segmentation, anomaly alerts, A/B notes, recovery recommendations.

Proof & risk reducers

Clear boundaries reduce refunds, and shorten support cycles.

What you get (v1)

  • Checkout step funnel (progress & drop-off)
  • Error/event logging (validation, payment failures) — sanitized
  • Device/source breakdown + country (derived)
  • Date-range filters
  • CSV export (events/aggregates as available)
  • Daily aggregation + cleanup via cron (retention policy)
  • Settings: tracking on/off, sampling, retention days, excluded roles

Read before you buy

  • No frontend UI in v1 (no blocks/shortcodes/widgets required).
  • Best-effort compatibility with checkout customization plugins; heavily customized flows may limit step detection.
  • Tracking is designed to avoid PII; you still manage consent/policy requirements.
  • Aggressive caching/CDN setups may require exclusions for accurate step impressions.
  • Anomaly alerts / automated suggestions are Pro (optional) and depend on enabled data signals.
  • Reports performance depends on store volume; aggregation is recommended for scale.
Fast diagnosis workflow: filter a problematic date range → identify top drop step → open “Top Issues” → export CSV → validate in staging → deploy fix → compare period-over-period (Pro).

FAQ (refund reducers)

Does this require GA4 / external analytics?
No for v1. DropSense can run without external APIs. Optional integrations may come later.
Will it slow down checkout?
Tracking is designed to be async and lightweight. Overhead depends on traffic volume and enabled signals; sampling is recommended on high-traffic stores.
Does it store personal data (PII)?
Designed for PII minimization: no full IP storage by default; error messages are sanitized. You still control consent and compliance requirements.
Will it work with my payment gateway?
Best-effort. Payment failures are logged when gateways surface errors in WooCommerce checkout hooks; highly customized gateways may provide limited error details.
How does abandonment detection work?
Sessions that don’t progress/complete after an inactivity window can be marked as abandoned via cron (window configurable).
Is it compatible with checkout customization plugins?
Theme-agnostic, designed for standard WooCommerce checkout. Deep customizations may reduce step mapping accuracy; test on staging.

Feature clusters

Actionable reporting: what happened → where → why → what to change.

Step funnel

See drop-off by checkout step. Accuracy depends on consistent step detection.

Error capture

Log validation and payment failures (sanitized). Depends on gateway error surfacing.

Device/source breakdown

Spot mobile friction and traffic-quality issues. Requires UTM/referrer signals.

Date filters + trends

Find regressions after changes. Trends depend on aggregation cadence.

Top Issues table

Prioritize recurring blockers (gateway/shipping/validation) by count.

CSV export

Share findings with dev/support. Export coverage depends on enabled datasets.

Retention + cleanup

90d events / 13mo aggregates default (configurable). Runs via cron.

Sampling controls

Reduce load on high volume checkouts. Lower sampling reduces precision.

1) Funnel visibility

  • Cart → Checkout → Billing/Shipping → Payment → Order received
  • Views/progress/drop-off per step
  • Completion rate summaries
  • Daily/weekly trend views
  • Period comparisons (Pro)
  • Dashboard widget summary (optional)

2) Issue capture

  • Validation errors (sanitized)
  • Payment failures / gateway errors (sanitized)
  • Shipping method issues (when available)
  • Top Issues table with counts
  • Gateway/shipping identifiers
  • A/B notes tagging (Pro)

3) Segmentation

  • Device class (desktop/mobile/tablet)
  • Traffic source (UTM/referrer)
  • Country (derived)
  • New vs returning (Pro)
  • Cart value bands (Pro)
  • Gateway and shipping method filters

4) Operations & scale

  • Async event posting (non-blocking)
  • Custom DB tables for events/aggregates (recommended)
  • Nightly aggregation for fast admin reports
  • Retention defaults + cleanup cron
  • Sampling rate for high-traffic stores
  • Anomaly alerts (Pro)

5) Privacy & controls

  • Consent-mode option (track after consent flag)
  • PII minimization (no full IP by default)
  • Sanitized error messages
  • Excluded roles (admin/shop manager testing)
  • Data purge tools
  • Capability-gated access (manage_woocommerce)

6) Pro (optional)

  • Automated UX suggestions
  • Period-over-period comparisons
  • Advanced segmentation
  • Anomaly detection alerts
  • Recovery recommendations
  • Scheduled summaries (email) (optional)

Use cases

If you are X → you achieve Y (supported by Z).

If you’re a CRO manager → you find the biggest friction point fast (step funnel + top issues).
If mobile conversion is low → you isolate device-specific drop-offs (device breakdown).
If payment failures spike → you identify gateways and error patterns (payment failure logging).
If shipping causes abandonment → you see impacted shipping methods (shipping issue capture).
If a theme update hurt checkout → you compare before/after periods (comparisons — Pro).
If campaigns drive low-quality traffic → you segment by source/UTM (source breakdown).
If support gets “checkout not working” tickets → you export evidence (CSV export).
If you run experiments → you document changes (A/B notes tagging — Pro).

Known limitations (read first)

  • Heavily customized checkout flows may reduce step mapping accuracy.
  • Some gateways may expose limited error details (sanitization applies).
  • Aggressive cache/CDN can affect impression accuracy unless excluded.
  • Abandonment marking depends on cron + inactivity window configuration.
  • Segmentation quality depends on available referrer/UTM signals.
  • Pro features (alerts/suggestions/comparisons) depend on enabled data and thresholds.
  • Not a recovery-email system by itself (recommendations only).
  • Reports performance improves with nightly aggregation on large stores.
